The way to install carpet on stairs is to first make sure that you have all of the supplies that you will need. Such supplies are as follows: tack strips, staples or upholstery nails, a measuring tape, knee kicker, carpet stretcher, utility knife, and a hammer. Of course you will also need the carpet, color of your choice. Also, if you prefer to work comfortably and are concerned for your safety, I recommend you have safety goggles and knee pads nearby as well. Once you have all of your supplies and tools together, the first thing that you are going to want to do is make sure that the area you are going to be working on is clean from dirt and clutter so your end product is smooth and you have the safest work area possible. The first step in installing carpet on stairs is to place the tack strips along each of the steps thread and riser, which is right where each side of the stair meets the wall. You want to attach the tack strips using a hammer and nails, or staples if you prefer. After attaching the tack strips, you want to place the carpet along each of the steps to ensure that it fits. You then want to place the carpet along each step and attach it. After you have attached the carpet, you want to tuck the edges and ensure that some of it will catch on the tack strip. Using the knee kicker, you are going to secure the rest of the carpet to the tack strips. You are going to then push the teeth of the knee kicker into the carpet using the cushioned part of the item with your knee. Finally, you want to trim away any extra carpet that is hanging off the edges with a utility knife.
